BULLETIN FOR ESTIMATING THE RISK OF AVALANCHES
FOR MASSIVE SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
THE FRIDAY 21 MARCH 2008
(Drafted Thursday, March 20)
ESTIMATE OF RISK FOR FRIDAY:
For Bauges and Beaufortain:
RISK MARK - Level 3 evolves HIGH RISK - Level 4
For Maurienne Vanoise, Haute Maurienne and Haute Tarentaise:
RISK MARK - Level 3
WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:
Snow starting at the end of the night, until the middle of intense
following night. Limit rain/snow below 1000 meters. Quantities
expected 25 to 70 cm south-east of the Savoie at Northwest.
Isothermal 0 ° C between 1000 and 1300 meters.
Wind General to 3000 m: west-northwest 60 to 100 km/h.
SNOW CONDITIONS:
They are generally lower than the average for the period below 1800
meters, but almost normal above. The thickness of snow ranges from
10 to 90 cm at 1500 meters and 50 to 200 cm at 2000 meters. The snow
started at best around 1200 meters in the north, but sometimes not
until 1800 meters in the south.
On the surface, the current snowpack Friday will be covered by a thick layer of snow locally windy.
STABILITY OF SNOW COVER:
NET DEGRADATION OF THE STABILITY WITH HIGH FALLS OF SNOW AND A LOT OF WIND
With heavy snowfall accompanied by violent gusts from the west to northwest, the situation will rapidly deteriorate. The risk will increase over time. It is expected normal attrition in all sufficiently steep slopes in various forms of heavy snow avalanches below 1800 meters in altitude powder, departures spontaneous slabs in the slopes loaded by the wind. Some of these avalanches may be a result of volume.
Of course the risk of inadvertent will also grow rapidly for skiers especially in the mass where the snowfall will be most intense. It should be confined to those areas known little steeper, located at altitudes modest and avoid guidance from a broad sector of the North (northwest to north-east) to East and South-East.
TREND OF RISK FOR SATURDAY:
Stationary or rising slightly with the north wind and heavy snow.
