N73311211
BULLETIN FOR ESTIMATING THE RISK OF AVALANCHE
FOR SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
TUESDAY, 1 JANUARY 2008
(Drafted Monday, December 31)

ESTIMATE OF RISK FOR TUESDAY:
For all the Savoie masses:
LIMIT RISK - Level 2

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:
The night is clear and cold. The day will be sunny with a north wind low to moderate.

Isothermal 0 ° C to 1500 meters.
Wind General 3000 meters: north to northwest 20 to 40 km / h.

SNOW CONDITIONS:
They are very good with a snow depth a little above average for the period. It reaches 30 to 70 cm at 1500 meters and 50 to 100 cm at 2000 meters. Note however that some high-altitude areas have been dismantled by the wind.
Snow skiing starts between 800 and 1400 meters according to the exhibition.

On the surface, a small layer of recent snow, 5 to 15 cm snow covers the old crust often from freezing or cured by the wind. The recent snow becomes a little damp beneath 1500 meters, it will harden by regel into the night.

STABILITY OF SNOW COVER:
SOME SMALL SURFACE SLABS

The snowpack is generally fairly well stabilized. Its internal layers are consolidated by settling or regel. The consolidation is less clear in the surface layers where weaknesses persisted in some places. With little snow cover (recent 5 to 10 cm, maximum 15), the north to northeast wind has been here and there are some small patches of light gauge mostly below peaks.

These slabs may possibly give place to an accidental release in the event of an overload by one or more skiers because they adhere poorly to the sub-strata crust consisting of grains or angular.

The risk of natural avalanches is small, activity is expected to remain limited to a few castings steep especially in the sunny slopes at low altitude.

TREND LATER RISK:
Few changes in the snowpack stability in the day Wednesday.

N73301211
BULLETIN FOR ESTIMATING THE AVALANCHE RISK - SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
ON MONDAY 31 DECEMBER
(Drafted Sunday, December 30)

ESTIMATE OF RISK FOR MONDAY:
For all the Savoie masses:
LIMIT RISK - Level 2

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:
The sky will clear during the night of Sunday to Monday. Monday will be sunny but cold due to a high north wind.

Isothermal 0 ° C to 700 and 1500 meters.
Wind General 3000 meters: north to north-east 20 to 50 km / h.

SNOW CONDITIONS:
They are good with a snow depth close to the average for the period. It reaches 30 to 70 cm since 1500 meters and 50 to 100 cm at 2000 meters. Note however that some high-altitude areas have been dismantled by the wind.
The snow begins between 800 and 1400 meters according to the exhibition.

On the surface, a small layer of recent snow, 5 to 15 cm, covers the old crust formed often by freezing or cured by the wind.

STABILITY OF SNOW COVER:

SOME NEW SURFACE SLABS

The snowpack is generally fairly well stabilized. Its internal layers are consolidated by settling or regel. The consolidation is less clear near the surface where weaknesses persisted in some places. With the small layer of recent snow (not exceeding 15 cm), the north wind can constitute small surface slabs here and there especially near the ridges.

These slabs may possibly give place to an accidental release in the event of overload by one or more skiers because they adhere poorly to the sub-strata crust consisting of grains or angular.

The risk of natural avalanches is small, activity is expected to remain limited to a few steep castings.

TREND LATER RISK:
Little change until Tuesday.

N73291211
BULLETIN FOR ESTIMATING THE AVALANCHE RISK - SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
FOR SUNDAY 30 DECEMBER 2007
(Drafted Saturday, December 29)

ESTIMATE OF RISK UNTIL SUNDAY EVENING:
On all mass: LIMIT RISK - Level 2

WEATHER OVERVIEW UNTIL SUNDAY EVENING:
After the nighttime snow (less than 10 cm), low temperatures sometimes cloudy with a bit of sun. Cold with a strong bise.

Isothermal 0 ° C in 1000 and then decline to 400 metres.
Wind General to 3000 m: NORTH WEST then 30 to 60 km / h.

SNOW CONDITIONS:
They remain good with layers of snow rather close to the average and end of December, or 30 to 70 cm since 1500 meters and 50 to 100 cm from 2000 m attention, but some areas are dismantled at altitude (rocks or ice visible ).
The limit of the snow skiing varies between 800 and 1400 metres according to the exhibition.
Fresh snow is expected to recover in part, from the old snow crust by freezing or by the wind, a little snow and cold consolidated 10 to 30 cm.

STABILITY OF SNOW COVER:
POSSIBLE NEW SURFACE SLABS

The snowpack is generally consolidated (compact, regel) although some surface instabilities persist in some places.

Thus, the weak snow expected (less than 10 cm) and high bise may contribute to the formation of small slabs on the surface but mostly aloft. They may possibly give rise to an inadvertent in case of overload (one or more skiers) because crusty sub-layers cohesion or without (Frost, faces planes) are hardly conducive to good adhesion.
It is unlikely that natural triggers will occur with the cooling provided, except in the form of some steep castings.

TREND LATER RISK:
Little change until Tuesday.

Still a few good turns to be had!

Hello again
I hope you’ve all had good x mas.
Santa didn’t bring us any snow but they say some might be on the way this weekend. (Unfortunately, I’m not that optimistic!)

So, we are walking quite a bit to find some good snow and there still some around if you sniff well!
Here are a few videos to show some nice turns that we had today.

Well done, Peter, Clair, Pascale, Jo, Tim and Robert!

The snow is generally quite stable with only the odd possible slab and a few “creepers” to watch out for that can slide naturally

Start doing snow dances and burns old skis for the snow gods and maybe we will get 10cm or more on Sunday!

Have fun and be safe!

N73271211
AVALANCHE RISK BULLETIN - SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
FOR FRIDAY 28 DECEMBER 2007
(Written Thursday, December 27)

ESTIMATE OF RISK UNTIL FRIDAY EVENING:
On all masses: LIMIT RISK-level 2

WEATHER OVERVIEW UNTIL FRIDAY EVENING:
Nice, dry weather. Some gusts on some border passes.

Isothermal 0 ° C up to 2000 meters.
Wind General to 3000 m: moving IS 20 to 30 (loc. 50) km / h.

SNOW CONDITIONS:
They remain good with layers of snow on the ground rather above-average for late December, or 30 to 70 cm at 1500 meters and 50 to 100 cm from 2000 m. The limit of snow skiing ranges between 800 and 1400 meters depending on the exposure.
The snow surface for a few days is undergoing a regal cycle/thawing slopes in the South (East to West) until 2200/2700 meters depending on the steepness of the slope. Elsewhere, it is either worked by the wind and more or less hard or brittle (border or at high altitude), or cold and poorly consolidated 10 to 30 cm.

STABILITY OF SNOW COVER:
SOME WIND SLABS AND SOME NATURAL DEPARTURES

The snow cover is generally consolidated (subsidence, regel) although some surface instabilities persist in some places.

So there is no doubt a few spots, following the winds of the South East, along the border massive or above 2500/2700 meters on the other border. They may possibly give rise to an accidental release in the  case of an overload (one or more skiers), particularly in North slope to the northeast.
Furthermore, the good sunshine and melting phenomena maintain humidification (after regel night), which can lead to some natural attrition. The cast and a few avalanches, as one or two slabs of substance, are still possible on steep sunny slopes, especially below 2000/2300 meters.

TREND SUBSEQUENT RISK:
Little change through Saturday.

N73261211
AVALANCHE RISK BULLETIN - SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
FOR THURSDAY 27 DECEMBER 2007
(Drafted Wednesday, December 26)

ESTIMATE OF RISK UNTIL THURSDAY EVENING:
On all masses: LIMIT RISK - Level 2

WEATHER OVERVIEW UNTIL THURSDAY EVENING:
The night sky clears and then the day is sunny. Gusts are possible on some border passes.
Isothermal 0 ° C to 1400 and 2100 metres.
Wind General to 3000 m: North East in the night and then east to north-east during the day 10/20 km/h.

SNOW CONDITIONS:
They remain good, with layers of snow on the ground locally approaching or exceeding the averages for the end of December, reaching, as soon as 1500 m: 30 to 70 cm, and 2000 m: 50 to 120 cm. The lower snow skiing limit ranges between 800 and 1400 m according to the exposure.
The snow surface Thursday morning will be subjected by the croûtée especially in the steep slopes subject to the effects of solar radiation (directed south-east to south-west), then it will soften and become humid during the day.  Elsewhere, it will be more or less hardened by the wind, especially the border massive most senior interior, or even cold, lightweight and consolidated 10 to 40 cm.

STABILITY OF SNOW COVER:
SOME SURFACE WIND SLABS AT ALTITUDE AND IN SOME NATURAL DEPARTURES LOW
After regel good night, and good radoucissement expected sunshine will again encourage some natural activity. Some surface casting of more or less wet snow can occur a little at all altitudes in the steep slopes subject to the effects of solar radiation. And some background slabs can be inserted again spontaneously on steep grassy slopes, especially below 2200 m. A surcharge of greater or lesser extent (as the passage of skiers) can promote their outbreak.
As for the more superficial slabs formed recently by the wind from east to south and Foehn Lombarde, their grains become gradually more angular under the action of cold, or the sun makes it wet, but they are still likely to break in a small surcharge with the passage of a single skier. This risk remains accidental especially on the massive border before the Foehn winds and Lombarda and the senior most massive internal (above 2500/2700 m), especially with little sunny slopes.
More in-depth, the snowpack has been consolidated, but it holds some fragile layers of snow without cohesion especially at 2300 m. A surcharge greater or lesser extent locally can pick up a slab more or less thick, especially on sunny slopes .

TREND LATER RISK:
Little change for Saturday.

Happy X mas, and keep looking for the snow!

Hi all,

Just a quick update from Val.

It's getting harder to find good snow since the wind has been messing things up for us for a while.

However it's not impossible to find some great turns if you look for it!

So, just as an example, here are two small vids of client's in my group today laying some nice tracks.

Well done Alex, Tony, Tibauld and Kristina.

Have a great x mas everyone and stay tuned for an update soon!

Avalanche bulletin and weather forecast Savoie

This avalanche translation of the Meteo France avalanche bulletin is produced mainly through an automated translation tool. Please use it in conjunction with the French bulletin found at the above link.

N73231211
BULLETIN FOR AVALANCHE RISK ESTIMATE FOR SAVOIE
Valid off marked and open trails
ON MONDAY 24 DECEMBER 2007
(Drafted Sunday, December 23)

ESTIMATE OF RISK:
For all the Savoie masses:
LIMIT RISK - Level 2

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:
The sky is still partially clouded in the mists emerges during the day. The east wind continues to falter. The maximum temperatures are rising.
Isothermal 0 ° C up to 2400 meters.
Wind General to 3000 m: dominates 20 km / h.

SNOW CONDITIONS:
They are excellent for the period with a thickness of snow on the ground between 40 and 60 cm since 1500 meters and 80 cm in Beaufortin. At 2000 meters, it reaches 70 to 130 cm. The snow begins around 800 to 1000 meters.
The surface of the snow has remained dry except below 1500 meters above, it is sometimes still powder, but more often densifiée and made irregular by the wind which has some empty areas near peaks.

STABILITY OF SNOW COER
SOME WIND SLABS AT ALTITUDE AND SOME NATURAL DEPARTURES  LOWER

Indeed, the wind, between south and east, carrying the snow in recent days on the edge of ridges, particularly in the chain border.
But the deeper layers of the snowpack are generally solid enough, and the instability caused by accumulations of snow by the wind remains localised and superficial.
In the chain border can be found these slabs in areas sheltered from the Foehn in Lombard. In other masses, be wary of exposed slopes north to northwest especially above 2300 m where internal layers of the snowpack are not as strong.

The risk of natural slab avalanches increases slightly with continued radoucissement. It mainly concerns the sunny slopes below 2400 metres where cracks and flows have already been observed in recent days but more rarely spontaneous departures of bottom slabs of a larger volume.

TREND LATER RISK:
Stationary for Tuesday.
